FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ACUPUNCTURE

↓ Is Acupuncture right for me?

Everyone can benefit from acupuncture! Acupuncture is a centuries-old healing modality within Traditional Chinese Medicine that stimulates your body’s own ability to heal itself and balance out the system. It is an excellent treatment option for specific health concerns (like musculoskeletal pain and injury) as well as general preventative wellness and immunity.

Stimulation of acupuncture points by highly trained practitioners create biochemical changes in the muscles, tissues and organs of our body, bringing forth the innate healing abilities we all have within us. Wherever you are at in your wellness journey, acupuncture can help.

↓ I’m scared of needles. Will Acupuncture hurt?

We get it--lots of people have a fear of needles and you are not alone. But acupuncture is not painful. Fun fact: acupuncture needles are incredibly thin (about the same diameter as a strand of hair), flexible, and pliable. During your treatment, you might find that some points are more sensitive than others but you should not feel sustained pain from needle insertion during your treatment.

Your practitioner is here to help you and will be there throughout the treatment to ease your mind. Be sure to communicate and your practitioner will immediately adjust if you are feeling any discomfort.

↓ What should I wear?

It is best to wear soft, loose-fitting, non-restrictive clothing for your treatment because your acupuncturist might need to reach areas like your elbows, knees, and abdomen.

We know you’re always on the go, though. If a comfier outfit is not in the cards for you on the day of your treatment, your treatment room will be stocked with soft fabrics to drape yourself in. You’ll be in a private room the whole time for maximum comfort and peace of mind.

↓ What is an acupuncture session like?

After checking in with our concierge, you will be escorted to your private room where you can make yourself comfortable. If you’re new, your acupuncturist will hold a complete consultation. If you’ve been treated by us before, your session will start with a short discussion about your progress since the last session and your current needs.

After your consultation, the needles will be inserted (this takes 5-10 minutes). Depending on your treatment focus, needles will be left in for 20-30 minutes. You’ll relax in a calm, peaceful room expertly designed to ease your mind.

↓ Should I eat before my session?

It’s important to not arrive on an empty stomach but limit heavy meals 1 hour before your session. Do your best to avoid greasy or heavy meals as well as highly caffeinated beverages. This will ensure that your body is in a restful calm state (instead of busy digesting) when you arrive for your treatment.

↓ Why do I have to show my tongue?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis, Tongue diagnosis is a critical component because all of the major organ meridians eventually reach the vessels of the tongue.

Just ask your acupuncturist--you can learn a surprising amount about someone’s health by looking at their tongue! Avoid eating food, coffee, tea, or any beverages 45 minutes to 1 hour before your session as to avoid altering the color or texture of the tongue - and definitely don’t tongue scrape!

↓ How many sessions do I need to know it is effective?

Every body is different. We encourage you to work with us to be mindful of how you feel so that you and your acupuncturist can measure progress together.

↓ How often should I go?

Acupuncture is like exercise--it is best practiced regularly and consistently. Treatment protocols definitely vary from patient to patient but most of our patients come in 1-2 times a week.

↓ Do you accept insurance?

Not at this time, unfortunately. However, we can provide you with information that you can use to submit an insurance claim.

↓ How many concerns can be treated in one session?

At ORA, we treat the whole body. All of your concerns, pains and ailments can be treated at every appointment but we do recommend narrowing in on two-three focus areas for maximum impact.

↓ Are there any side effects?

Part of the reason why we love acupuncture is because there are no direct side effects. Sometimes, minor irritation at the area of insertion can occur. Some patients report feeling slightly drowsy after treatments. Beyond that, you should not anticipate side effects.

TEAS + TONICS

↓ Are the Teas and Tonics safe for pregnant or nursing woman?

Tonic herbs are generally considered safe and the amounts used in each tonic shot are generally small dosages; however, in order to maintain a conservative approach for pregnant women, particularly in the first trimester, the following ingredients should be avoided and replaced with Reishi and/or Chaga:

  • • Deer Antler Essence (energy shot)
  • • Supreme Shen (stress shot)
  • • Yin Replenisher (stress shot, women’s health shot)
  • • Shanghai Lady (women’s health shot)
  • • Deer Antler Essence (energy shot)
  • • Dew Drops (digestion shot)
  •

Reishi is highly recommended for both nursing and pregnant women

↓ What is in the tonics?

Tonics are very special herbal substances that have been revered and administered successfully for thousands of years by Taoist masters. Associated with longevity and vitality, they can help to enhance energy, physical strength, sexual vitality, mental acuity, spiritual wisdom and more.

When consumed regularly, tonic herbs help balance and tone most body systems. They are used to strengthen immunity, reduce inflammation and restore overall wellness.

↓ How do the tonics work?

Most of the herbs in these recipes are known as adaptogens, meaning they work multi-directionally to help the body adapt to stress, reduce cortisol levels and restore vitality.

Although tonics are natural herbal remedies used for many health conditions, they are not normally used medicinally to "treat" specific illnesses. Tonics work to build and strengthen our immunity, making us less susceptible to sickness.

Tonic herbs are considered "foods" that can be used on a regular basis throughout the course of a lifetime. The effect of tonic herbs tends to increase the more you use them, yielding cumulative long-term benefits. Tonic herbalism is a preventative approach, supporting optimal health before disease takes root.

Herbs and herbal tinctures have no adverse side effects if taken as directed.

This particular class of super herbs can be extremely valuable as a dietary adjunct to overall well-being in ways that can't be matched by most commonly consumed foods or nutrients.

↓ Where did you get the teas from?

Our teas were custom blended by Abbe Tea Company, which uses organic, fair trade, and sustainably harvested ingredients, blending classical Chinese Medicine Philosophy with modern herbal innovations.
